Our good friend and local ground operator in South Africa, Shaun Scrooby from Adventura Tours and Travel, has been fortunate to meet wonderful people from all over the world. But none have touched his life as those he met at the Angels of Hope Foundation. This Kenya-based non-profit organization has created The Peaceful Home for Children, an orphanage located in Kianyaga, Kenya, currently caring for 14 children. The Kenyan culture does not practice adoption and thus these ventures are of vital importance, providing the children with a safe, healthy upbringing and a promising education.
Along with The Angels of Hope Foundation, Shaun organized a project to bring awareness and help raise funds for improving conditions at the orphanage. He set off on a 190-mile journey around Mt. Kenya initially accompanied by children and staff from the Foundation. The everchanging scenery was mostly mountainous terrain with small rivers, tea and coffee fields, and endless mango and banana plantations. After two weeks of rigorous walking with numerous aches and pains and a sea of emotions, the trek ended with the best sight of all: 14 smiling children waving and running out to say thank you as Shaun re-entered Kianyaga.
The money raised will provide gas stoves in the central kitchen and a proper washing area. Previously, cooking was done over an open fire and bathing was accomplished by using a plastic bucket. A roofed entertainment area will also be completed.
